Kate MacGarry, one of the most influential contemporary art gallerists in London, met us to introduce new work by Matt Bryans. Thousands of photographs cut out of colour newspapers and erased of their documentary clarity take on a haze of associations in this impressive installation that threatened to take over the whole gallery space. Using simply a pencil eraser, Bryans converts the world’s news into a collage that speaks more pictorially of shifts in tone and colour than of famine, murder or sports.

In Dec’03, Trolley Gallery was created as an offspring of Trolley Books. Since then, alongside being an independent publisher of photography and contemporary art books, Trolley has become a must-see gallery in the East End. We visited an exhibition by David Fryer, Robert Montgomery and Sean Flynn, three close friends in the wake of Fryer's death in 2004. We discovered how friendship can be translated into art in an exhibition of drawings, installations and sculptures spread over the two spaces. Robert Montgomery introduced the show.

Raphaëlle Bolloré-Bischoff and Paola Weiss opened in June 05 after spending a couple of years promoting artists from home. They were showing one of their youngest talents, Maya Hewitt. Her work encompasses ideas of escapism and introverted adventure, where reality and imagination are reinvented to create fantastic worlds of colour and fantasy. She covered the walls of the gallery with her startling collages and transform the space into a life-size version of a children’s pop-up book. The artist kindly came to meet us.

This exquisitely beautiful conversion of a meat-packing factory is the sister of baroque-kitsch dining restaurant Les Trois Garçons. It’s packed with the same gorgeous curiosity shop type clutter as the restaurant. We were just as impressed by their cocktails...
